A powerful 7.1-magnitude quake struck early Monday (February 23, 2025) off Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo island, U.S. seismologists mentioned.

The epicentre of the quake was positioned lower than 100 kilometres (62 miles) northeast of the coastal state capital Kota Kinabalu at a depth of 619.8 kilometres, the US Geological Survey mentioned.

The quake struck at 12.57 a.m. (1657 GMT Sunday).

The USGS rated the probability of casualties or harm as low, and the U.S. Tsunami Warning Heart didn’t concern an alert, saying the depth of the quake meant tsunami exercise was not anticipated.

The Malaysian Meteorological Division mentioned it could “proceed to observe the scenario carefully,” placing the quake’s magnitude at 6.8.

It mentioned tremors have been felt on Sabah’s west coast and in a number of areas of Sarawak state.
