Mohhammad Baqer Zolqadr, a veteran commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has been appointed as the brand new Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Nationwide Safety Council (SNSC).

Mr. Zolqadr, who at the moment serves because the secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council, an advisory physique to the Supreme Chief, replaces Ali Larijani, who was assassinated by an Israeli strike on March 17.

He beforehand served as deputy chief of the Common Workers of the Armed Forces for Basij and held senior positions within the judiciary.

After the Iran-Iraq conflict of 1980-88, Mr. Zolqadr headed the IRGC Joint Workers for eight years in the course of the presidency of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

He headed the electoral headquarters of the ‌hardline political faction, the Common Entrance of Islamic Revolutionary Forces.

Since 2022, he has served as secretary of ⁠the Expediency Discernment Council. This meeting ⁠resolves variations between parliament and the Guardian Council of Shi’ite ‌clerics and jurists, who can veto laws and supervise elections.

The SNSC, formally chaired by the elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, coordinates safety and overseas coverage, ‌and contains high navy, intelligence and authorities officers along with representatives of the Supreme Chief, who has final ‌say over all issues of State.
