“A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck simply off the coast of Taiwan’s northeastern county of Yilan on Tuesday (February 24, 2026),” the island’s climate administration stated, with no reviews of harm.
“The quake briefly shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The quake had a depth of 66.8 km (41.5 miles),” the climate administration stated.
The Hearth Division stated the quake’s epicentre was 16.9 km (10.5 miles) from the county authorities seat and in coastal waters.
Taiwan lies close to the junction of two tectonic plates and is liable to earthquakes. Greater than 100 individuals had been killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, whereas a 7.3 magnitude quake killed greater than 2,000 individuals in 1999.
